Offered for sale is a highly collectible studio pottery footed bowl by internationally acclaimed South African art potter Hylton Nel. The bowl is signed on the base with the artists initials in a square frame and the date 5.2.1996. This is a hand built slumped bowl with a splayed foot and quite a deep inner well. The central motif is the temptation of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden hand painted in a puce ,mauve brown colour with accents of sky blue ,yellow and pink. By a quirky invention the serpent is figured as half man half snake with the upper body of a rather gormless, bald headed man extending a small apple to Eve. The serpent has his left hand raised in greeting/benediction. The sides of the bowl are decorated with vertical irregular bands of a puce brown colour .
A similar bowl with the same motif was sold on Russel Kaplan Auctions Jhb Dec 2015 for R7000. The agents for Hylton Nels work in South Africa Michael Stevenson Gallery Cape Town priced a slightly larger bowl 28cm wide with the same themed motif at R12000 in the 2015 catalogue of available ceramics for sale.
Courier delivery cost R150; alternatively collect from Emmerantia Jhb.
