Review
The word "classic" is used with very little care nowadays, with any game (or movie or song) that manages to stay popular for more than a week earning the accolade. Street Fighter II, though, is the real McCoy, not only being one of the world's few perfect video games but having almost by itself managed to give birth to the whole one-on-one beat-'em-up genre.
That was a long time ago, though, and Street Fighter II (Street Fighter I was almost entirely rubbish, which was why the Street Fighter Alpha series was created to help erase it from history) is now celebrating its 15th birthday, primarily through the release of Hyper Street Fighter II. This is essentially a compilation of all the different versions of the game throughout the years, including the original, Champion Edition, Turbo, Super and Super Turbo.
Instead of just including each game separately on the disc, each of the versions are mixed in together so that you can have, for example, the original's Ryu going up against Super Street Fighter II Turbo's Chun-Li. These sort of details are for the real hardcore though and should not detract from the fact that this is still one of the most fun and accessible video games ever made. So whether you buy it as a celebration of one of gaming's brightest stars or just because you want to play a fun, unpretentious video game, you'll not find anything better than this. --David Jenkins
