This is the life story of a strongly independent Edith Laura Pickering who, at the age of 19 left London in 1876 and travelled to South Africa on her own, at a time when young, well educated ladies were to be cossetted and cared for. At the age of 21 she married Fred Kelly. It was love at first sight. He, however turned out to be an inveterate wanderer who left his young wife alone to cope with every challenge that life on her own threw at her. This courageous young woman raised 9 children mostly on her own, as Fred drifted in and out of her company. Through the Boer War he left her alone, while he went off to act as interpreter and guide to the British forces. 9 photographic illustrations.
