The full story of 30 Assault Unit and how their exploits formed the basis of the most popular spy fiction series of the twentieth century. In 1942, Lt Cdr Ian Fleming RNVR had a brilliant idea: why not set up a unit of troops to steal enemy intelligence? Known as 30 Assault Unit, they took part in the landings in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy and helped liberate Paris but their real aim was to gather information, from coded messages to bits of the Enigma machine to military strategy. Some of what they stole was sent back to the British code breakers at Bletchley Park, who were crucial to winning the war.
