Step back in time to the vibrant, eclectic homes of 1970s and 1980s South Africa with this striking pair of retro ceramic wall art discs. These pieces perfectly capture the essence of an era when front entrances and living spaces across suburbia were proudly adorned with bold, often chunky, ceramic designs be it oversized fish, quirky Mexican figures, or unique abstract statements just like these. Their presence evokes a powerful sense of nostalgia, reminding us of a distinct period in South African home décor that celebrated individual expression and vibrant artistry.
Each piece is quite substantial, boasting a generous diameter of approximately 25cm and a sturdy thickness of 2cm, giving them a wonderful tactile presence. The design is a truly unusual and rather attractive abstract composition, featuring vibrant, mottled orange and red centres encased by a rustic green ring, all set against a dark, earthy background. This captivating colour combination and textured finish make them standout pieces, offering a fascinating visual focal point wherever they're placed. Both pieces are fitted with hardware on the back, making them ready to hang and display immediately.
Flipping them over, you'll find each disc is proudly marked "Hand Made Buxi RSA" on the back, confirming their authentic South African origin. While detailed information about the "Buxi" studio or artist from that period is somewhat scarce online, this only adds to their unique allure as collectible pieces of local artistic history. The orange disc has a small chip on the green border, which in our opinion, adds to its rustic and authentically vintage appeal. The red disc is in excellent condition.
