At first glance, this piece appears to be something that must have been designed by a Gemini in the midst of a profound personality shift – an identity crisis in imbuia. A second look however will convince you of the aesthetic appeal and utility of this unique piece. Dark wood pieces with barley twist features are much sought after at the moment, and I’m certain this listing will attract a lot of attention. Four robust but pleasantly curved legs sweep upwards to meet at the substantial and beautifully turned base of the standard lamp shaft. Immediately above this is a circular tabletop with deeply contoured linenfold like edges. Beyond the tabletop, the shaft spirals upwards to conclude the piece with a magnificent barley twist flourish. This piece is as well-finished as it is unusual – a very nice piece of solid wood furniture. If you’re looking for a standard lamp that’s also a conversation piece – look no further. Actual dimensions on the piece are; floor to tip 153cm, barley twist portion of shaft is 96cm, floor to underside of table is 55cm. The tabletop is roughly 53cm in diameter, and 20mm thick.
There is a split on the tabletop that will have to be attended to before much longer. It’s a clean split, following the grain, which will be inexpensive to repair, and invisible after it’s done. There is some light marking on part of the table surface – a few energetic polishes might well remove this, or at worst, a light sanding may be required.
The dimensions and weight of this piece will probably make normal postage impractical, but I can explore this further if requested. If the buyer lives within reasonable driving distance from Durban, I will be happy to deliver for a nominal fee, to be agreed at conclusion of sale with the winning bidder. If the buyer lives beyond these environs, they will have to make their own arrangements for collection. I will assist by packing/wrapping the item, and being available for the collection thereof.
