In my opinion the Trident is probably the most widely spread species used in the Bonsai world. It is the ideal subject for bonsai cultivation and is extremely hardy, certainly so when compared to the more tender Japanese maples.
There are many cultivars of Acer and they are mostly divided between palmatum and trident varieties. In Japan, these two varieties are known as Momiji (Japanese Maple) and Kaede (Chinese Maple). The tree on auction is a Kaede.
One of the desirable characteristics of Kaeda is their ability to mould around objects after some years in bonsai cultivation. When grown over stones it can cover them in a few years with an almost lava like tissue that fuses when it touches its own tissue.
This Kaeda has been developed slowly for many years and pruning scars are virtually non-existent. Further proof of its slow development can be found by studying the slender branches which have lots of character and of course the wonderful ramification which has been built up year after year.
The stone used for this root over rock planting is a popular stone for this purpose in Japan.
Please note: This trees apex branch broke during transport. A replacement has been started but will need further development.
