Impressive 'Shona Bakatwa' African Dagger/Walking Stick
This superb, authentic, early walking stick with dagger, of the 'Shona' people from Zimbabwe (formally Rhodesia), probably dates to around the 1920/30's. The handle has been carved in the form of a baboon with a large ring, out of a lovely piece of two-tone hard wood. The stick/sheath has been carved out of a single piece of dark wood, which is beautifully bound and braided with copper wire in three places. It has a lovely hand forged double-edged blade, with one half decorated with black patina.
This walking stick with dagger, came together with the 'Shona Bakatwa' (Dagger & Sheath) that I listed earlier, and other than the length of sheath/walking stick and handle, the blade is identical and appears to have been made by the same person as the workmanship is very similar.
Other than a small chip to the wood on the handle, this superb dagger and stick are in great condition. The lovely copper wire work is nice and tight with a super patina, with no sign of unravelling. The dagger and stick measures 88cm in length, the blade measures 29,8cm, and the handle 25,5cm x 9,5cm and together weigh 805g.
Note: The 'Bakatwa' is a double-edged sword or dagger used in traditional Shona religious ceremonies.
