Item Description: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1890. Decorative Cloth. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Numerous (illustrator). First Edition. 2 Volumes, xvi+530 and xvi+572pp. 8vo. Original gilt decorated reddish brown pictorial cloth, good +. Volume 1 has a few pages at the front with foxing, no pages loose or missing. Volume 2 is more worn with hinge at rear paste down starting to crack but still well attached,  but this is otherwise a very good example of this set of first editions. . With frontispieces and 3 coloured folding maps (Map 1 is good but has a tear, map 2 has seen better days! Quite worn along folding edges with a tape repair in bottom right corner with some loss. But at least it's there! Map 3 is still firmly bound into the text block and is in good condition.) In addition to 150 wood engravings, this is Stanley’s remarkable account of his expedition from the East Coast through the heart of Africa to the land of The Nile. This expedition was originally intended as a rescue mission for Emin Pasha after Khartoum fell into hands of the Mahdists and General Gordon was killed. Athough failing in its primary objective, the expedition accomplished great things, Stanley discovered the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, besides a new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza, and a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria, and he had come upon the pigmy tribes who had inhabited the great African forest since prehistoric times. On his way down to the coast Stanley had concluded treaties with various native chiefs which he transferred to Sir William Mackinnon's company and so laid the foundation of the British East African Protectorate. The largest fold out map shows the routes taken on the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. The woodcut illustrations are splendid and the frontispiece to both volumes is tissue protected.
