Recsaed with green leather look rexine covered boards.
Pages xviii + 672.
Frontispiece with tissue guard and many in-text illustrations and full page illustrations.
Large fold-out colour map follows page 672.
Some splits along the fold seams and one closed tear. 1cm tabs of tape to the reverse of the map to strengthen strategic folds.
Foxing throughout.
Stanley succumbed to pressure to issue a cheaper version of the original publication of 1890. In this 1897 edition he states in the preface that " I have gladly seized the opportunity to correct many errors, eliminate much matter that had only a temporary interest, and rearrange some of the chapters that seemed to me to interfere with the continuity of the narrative".
