About this Item

With the original gilt decorated boards and spine, rebound and in excellent condition. Complete! The scarce large fold out map is at the back and fully intact, with the tape of a previous repair carefully removed and restored. The frontispiece of Chelmsford with tissue paper and the real photograph of Bartle Frere are both present, as is the photograph of Wolseley, all full page. The full page illustration of Cetwayo is also present , as are eight further fold-out plans and sketches. So 9 fold-out lithographs in all including the large map. And 4 portraits, including the frontispiece. Restitched and restored. New brown endpapers. All the sketches and maps and plans have been reset. Exquisitely done. With the interesting flowing signature of a key figure in the history of Natal in that time, W.H. Beaumont, who dates his signature 15 June 1881. At that time Beaumont was the Magistrate at the town of Newcastle in Natal and leader of the "Memorialists" anxious to preserve the neutrality of Newcastle in the dispute between the Imperial Government and the Transvaal due to their business links with the latter. Beaumont was known to Norris-Newman and is referred to in other writings by this author. There are also two neat signatures of a previous owner after Beaumont. Complete with all appendices and 40 pages of advertisements at the back. An extremely rare first edition, especially with this association and in this condition and state of completeness.
