This incredible and exceptionally well made (folding) oriental or Asian rosewood Japanese horseshoe armchair (or Jiaoya) with brass detailing is a stunning chair that has its roots as far back as the 16th century. These classic chairs feature rounded crest rails with out-sweeping arm-rests and curved extensions attached to the front legs, the backrest is decorated with a carved mandala and the rear legs are attached to the front seat rail. The seat is made from a woven hemp and the chair is decorated with gorgeous brass appliques (see pics). The chair measures a decent 67cm long x 65cm wide x 91cm high. The chair is very sturdy and has been very well looked after with absolute minimal age and usage related wear and tear. Please view the pictures carefully to fully appreciate this stunning rosewood armchair and to confirm the condition.
From the internet: "Armchair with a round back. This belongs to the highest grade of jiaoyi and was for the exclusive use of members of the imperial family. When folded, such chairs could be carried on a journey, and this is why they were also known as travelling chairs. When the emperor went on a hunting excursion, his bodyguard would follow in tow with the folding chairs on their shoulders. Thus jiaoyi was also known as Hunters chair."
