"Indian Delights, A Book of Recipes" is a perennial South African classic. The cornerstone and staple of Durban cuisine. But more and as important a book produced by the Women's Cultural Group, a group of Durban women, who formally excluded from both political and customary power, forged a citizenship and public life for themselves. In the midst of apartheid, feminism, doctrinal shifts in Islam & others, the Women's Cultural Group were agents of change, not only within local communities but in the making of our new South Africa.
The editor, Zuleikha Mayat was a remarkable pioneer, writer, public speaker, civic worker, human rights activist and philanthropist. As the third-generation child of Indian-South African shopkeepers from Potchefstroom, she embodied principled, faith-based, socially committed, inspired leadership based on her special talents and resilience.
