John Guy, Indian Textiles in the East: From Southeast Asia to Japan. London: Thames & Hudson, 2009.

Quarto, stiff card wraps, 192 pages, magnificently illustrated, largely in colour.

Very good to fine condition.

'This study has been in the making over the past fifteen years, stimulated by the appearance in Southeast Asia of Indian textiles of unfamiliar designs and of uncertain antiquity. It gradually became clear that these cloths were the legacy of Asia's great spice trade, and that many of them dated from that trade's heyday, when they were employed as a commodity in the markets of Southeast Asia. ...

'I have pursued fieldwork on this subject in India, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Japan, as well as in the archives and historical collections of Europe. Concurrently, I have worked towards assembling a comprehensive collection of Indian trade textiles for the Victoria and Albert Museum. The results of these efforts are published here for the first time.'

A valuable reference for the textile collector and for anyone interested in historical interiors.
