G. H. Calpin set out to write a "straight" history of the Indians in South Africa from the days of their immigration, mainly as indentured sugar plantation labourers, up to the present day. Probably no man was better equipped to undertake the task: probably no man was less likely to write such a history and keep it "straight" in the sense of avoiding the intrusion of his own robust and analytical mind.
