A premium indoor potting soil made from composted, milled bark. Free-draining, stable, and suitable for most houseplants that prefer an airy root environment.
Bag size 2dm (or 2 litres)
Commonly known as: Indoor Potting Soil
This Indoor Potting Soil is based on Bark Unlimited's premium composted milled bark, one of South Africa's most trusted and consistent potting soil bases. It has been carefully processed to create a stable, free-draining medium that supports healthy root growth without compacting over time.
Unlike heavy, peat-dominant mixes, bark-based potting soil allows oxygen to reach the roots more easily. This reduces the risk of waterlogging and root rot, making it particularly well suited to indoor plants where airflow and evaporation are naturally lower.
This soil works well as a standalone potting mix for many houseplants, or as a base component that can be amended with perlite, bark chips, or other additives depending on the plant's needs. It is the same professional-grade material used by growers, simply rebadged for convenient home use.
If you're looking for a dependable indoor soil that behaves predictably and doesn't turn to sludge after a few waterings, this is it.

This bark-based mix drains efficiently while still holding enough moisture for roots to access. Always allow excess water to drain away and avoid letting pots stand in water.

Indirectly, yes. Free-draining soil works best in bright, indirect light where moisture levels remain balanced. In lower light, watering frequency should be reduced to compensate.

Yes. The structure of composted bark naturally creates air pockets, improving oxygen flow to roots and reducing the risk of fungal issues in indoor environments.

Ideal for a wide range of houseplants including philodendrons, monsteras, pothos, ficus, dracaenas, and many foliage plants. It can also be customised by adding Perlite or Bark Chips for plants that need extra drainage.

This potting soil does not contain any heavy pre-added fertilisers. Feed plants as needed using a liquid option such as Grobest Organic Fertiliser, or incorporate Controlled Release Fertiliser at repotting time.

When repotting, retain some of the plant's existing soil around the root ball and backfill with this mix. For best results, you can blend in TerraPlus Natura N and Controlled Release Fertiliser directly into the soil at this stage.

Healthy, well-aerated soil reduces plant stress, which in turn makes plants less susceptible to pests. Always inspect new plants before potting.

The soil performs best in typical indoor temperature ranges between 18 °C and 28 °C. Cooler conditions will slow drying, so adjust watering accordingly.
Q: Is this soil ready to use straight from the bag?
Yes. It can be used as-is for many indoor plants.
Q: Can I mix this with other components?
Absolutely. It works well as a base mix with perlite, bark chips, or other amendments.
Q: Is this soil peat-free?
It is bark-based rather than peat-heavy, making it more stable and free-draining over time.
Q: Why does bark-based soil matter indoors?
Indoor pots dry more slowly. Bark-based mixes reduce compaction and improve root health.
