Rare Inert WWII Era British ML 3-Inch MK 2 Mortar with 6 Tail Vanes

A SCARCE WW2 ERA ML 3 INCH MK 2 MORTAR SHELL WITH 6 TAIL VANES. ORDNANCE STAMPED WITH WHAT CAN BE DECIPHERED AS (3 MOR) AND (10 LB II) AND WHAT APPEARS (PLEASE SEE PHOTO) TO BE (3 51) WHICH MIGHT BE THE DATE STAMP. IF THE DATE IS INDEED 1951 IT IS SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE KOREAN WAR.

The main body is cast iron with 2 bands of copper near the fuse end and a bands of yellow just above the outer copper band. Red, yellow or green bands were most often used to denote hazardous munitions. Other colours may have been used or colours may have faded over time.

Mortar The Ordnance ML 3-inch was a British 81mm mortar from the interwar period and World War II. The first prototypes of this weapon appeared in the 1930s, and the mortar entered service before 1939. The mass of the projectile fired from this mortar is about 4.5 kilograms, and the range is about 2500-2600 meters.

The British 3-inch Stokes Mortar originally had no tail vanes (10-11lb/4.5-5.0 kg). A subsequent variation of the bomb was constructed with 3 tail vanes (approx 7lb/3.2 kg). Both variants were widely used by Commonwealth forces until superseded by the ML 3-inch Mortar bomb Mk II with 6 tail vanes in the early 1930s (approx 10lb/4.5 kg).

Interestingly, despite the term (3-inc, i.e. 76mm), the gun had a caliber of 81 mm, which was the same as many other mortars of this type at the time. It is worth adding that the weapon was reliable and very solid, but in the Mark I model it had a relatively low range (around 1500 meters), which was improved only in the Mark II version. Mortar The Ordnance ML 3-inch was the primary support weapon for British infantry during World War II. It remained in service until the 1960s!
