Initial D Arcade Stage Ver. 2 is an arcade racing game. It is based on the Initial D manga and anime series. The game runs on the Sega NAOMI 2 arcade system and serves as the second entry in the Initial D Arcade Stage series.
Two new mountain pass courses are addedAkagi and Irohazakabringing the total number of selectable tracks to six. Each course features unique layouts and difficulty tiers, ranging from beginner-friendly routes like Myogi to expert-level challenges such as Irohazaka. The game also introduces rainy weather conditions.
Seven new characters are added to the Legend of the Streets story mode, expanding the narrative to include rivals such as Kyoko Iwase, Kenta Nakamura, and the infamous "Two Guys From Tokyo." Additionally, a new single-player Challenge Bunta mode allows players to race against Bunta Fujiwara, the father of protagonist Takumi Fujiwara. In Time Attack mode, players receive post-race driving analysis and guidance from Ryosuke Takahashi, adding a layer of coaching to the gameplay.
The game offers a wide selection of playable vehicles, with seven new cars added for this release. The roster includes a diverse mix of Japanese performance vehicles from manufacturers such as Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota. Notable additions include the Suzuki Cappuccino (EA11R), RX-7 Spirit R Type A (FD3S), Toyota Altezza RS200 Z Edition (SXE10), and the Celica GT-Four (ST205). Each car features distinct handling characteristics and performance profiles.
The game maintains its focus on drift-based racing through Japans mountain passes (known as Touge), combining technical cornering with arcade accessibility. Multiplayer functionality allows for competitive head-to-head battles between linked arcade units, while the magnetic card system lets players save their progress, car customizations, and stats for future sessions.
The PS2 version has two game modes. The "Arcade Mode", as its name suggests, is a direct port of the arcade game, where the player chooses a car from a list of Japan's most famous drift machines, and hits the streets challenging characters out of the manga. The objective here is to simply beat every one of the characters to become the number one driver. As players go along, they collect points, which can be used to upgrade the car.
The second mode, "Story Mode", allows the player to control Takumi, the protagonist of the series. In this mode, there are a number of missions the player must complete. These missions are modelled after the events of the manga and anime series. Most of the missions involve racing characters from the manga, in the same order that Takumi raced them in the original work.
