SAMMY MARKS COINS HISTORY: The 1898 ZAR "Sammy Marks Tickey" is a rare, 22-carat gold pattern coin (3 pence) privately struck by industrialist Sammy Marks in 1898. Only 215 were produced at the Pretoria Mint for his friends and family using official 1898 silver dies, making it a highly prized, non-circulating collector's item. It is one of the "[Big 5]" rarest South African Republic (ZAR) coins, reflecting a personal gift from President Paul Kruger to Marks for his mining services. Only 215 pieces were struck. Many were used in jewelry, making high-grade examples extremely rare. Obverse features President Paul Kruger; Reverse displays "3" for three pence (a "tickey" in SA slang) with "1898" and "Z.A.R.". Struck in 22-carat gold, 16.3 mm in diameter with a thickness of around 1.98mm Many replicas exist. Original coins show a complete lack of stops in the "Z.A.R." monogram, unlike some copies. Original Sammy Marks coins are highly valued, often selling for over R500,000.
