GEORGE PAUL CANITZ (SA 1874 - 1959) - STUNNING FRAMED CAPE LANDSCAPE OIL ON CANVAS

George Paul Canitz Born 1874, Leipzig, Germany; died Stellenbosch, Cape, 1959 Canitz studied for a diploma in painting at the Saxon Academy in Dresden. In 1909, aged 36, he was sent to live in SWA/Namibia for health reasons. There he travelled widely by ox wagon, sketching and painting in a spacious, harshly lit landscape that transformed his work. He also made forays into neighbouring regions, and his affection for the Boland of the Western Cape prompted him to settle at the farm Muratie near Stellenbosch in 1925.
