CAPE TOWN artist Mike Fitzpatrick, whose paintings and prints are featured in private and corporate collections all over the world, died from a heart attack in his city studio on Friday. He was 70. Born in Leeds, England, Fitzpatrick came to South Africa in the 1960s. He worked as a creative director in advertising and also owned a large photographic studio. He focused on painting about 16 years ago, said Lulu, his personal and professional partner of 40 years and wife of 33 years. He exhibited his first works at his then combination home/studio in Long Street and sold five paintings. He and Lulu then opened Skylight Galleries, which at the time was the only art gallery in the V & A Waterfront.
