Karl Kaufmann was an Austrian painter best known for his depictions of cities and landscapes throughout Europe. His work is notably atmospheric, and often highlights the particular architecture endemic to different countries. For example, in Kaufmann’s painting Italian Town, he emphasizes the details of the stone buildings that cloister around the water by utilizing strategic shadows and highlights to throw them into sharp relief. Born in 1843 in Austria, he went on to study at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Kaufmann died in 1902 in Austria.
