Maker: Songea or Luba tribe, DRC (formerly Zaire)
Date: Estimated date 1920-1950. It is very difficult to accurately African pieces as many were handed down in the families and many later pieces were copied from existing pieces. Please take note this is a genuine axe, not a tourist reproduction!
History: The Songye people, sometimes written Songe, are a Bantu ethnic group from the Central Democratic Republic of the Congo They speak the Songe language. They inhabit a vast territory between the Sankuru/Lulibash river in the west and the Lualaba River in the east. They are related to the Luba tribe.
Description: Hand-beaten iron axehead attached to a hard wood shaft. Please take note of the decoration showing series of holes and indentations as well as the raised edges on the blade. This axe would have been created by an accomplished blacksmith using the barest of tools.
Condition: Good condition throughout.
Dimensions: The wooden shaft measures 35cm in length whilst the axe blade measures 13cm in length and 12cm at its broadest width.
