Original Signed and Dated War Cartoon, framed under glass, frame is 32 cms x 47 cms, cartoon is 18 cms x 30 cms, condition: very good.
Dated 1941 and signed by the artist, E,Natoli at Addis Ababa in the then Italian East Africa, now Ethiopia. The scene depicts a rather ghoulish and macabrely scene in an Italian Field Surgical Hospital with the artist inserting himself into the scene with presumably his opinion of the predicament the Italians found themselves in.
In the previous year,1940, the East African Campaign began with Italian advances into British-held Kenya, British Somaliland and Sudan with their armed forces successfully invading all of British Somaliland. But, in the spring of 1941, the British had counter-attacked and pushed deep into Italian East Africa. By 5 May, 1941, Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia had returned to Addis Ababa to reclaim his throne. This cartoon reflects that counter-attack.
