The medal of honour for large families was awarded, from 1939 until 1950, to Italian mothers of families consisting of at least seven children (including children who died in war or for national cause). This entitled the mother to a reward of 5 pounds per child, but was increased to a reward of 15 pounds per child if the children were given patriotic names such as Benito, Italo, Vittorio, Emanuele, Amadeo, Maria, Italia or Umberto. The medal was to be worn during all holidays, solemn, civil and public functions. Attached to the ribbon are small aluminium bows, representing each child.
