1st type - ARMY RECCE DIVER badges (1973 to 1987). Below is the ARTCARD showing the description of the badge.
This is an ORIGINAL item. The Army Diver (1 Recce) badge was approved in 1973.
The chrome Army Diver (1 Recce) badge is the Advance type for the Attack Diver/Supervisor (pre 1987).
These regular size - Army Diver badges were only issued to S.A. Army Recce Operator`s. No Navy Diver`s received these badges, because the objective of the Navy Diver was defensive (rescue/mine clearance) & support (maintenance & repair). The Recces objective was offensive (infiltration/sabotage) & reconnaissance (observation).
Initially, this badge was officially proposed as a 1 RECCE DIVER badge, but was amended to ARMY DIVER badge. During the approval of the badge in 1973, only 1 Recce existed. When 2, 4 & 5 Recce Commando`s (later Regiment`s) were established, their members were also allowed on the course. The badge was retrospective to 1970 (first army divers course).
Before 1973, the Recces wore the regular-size Navy cloth insignia (blue/red/yellow - front view Siebe Gormann Diver helmet) on the sleeve. These badges were an ordinary "cut-out" version of the combined cloth embroided Navy Diver/Rank Insignia sleeve badge. They were worn by Recce, as follows: The yellow was worn on the tunic. The blue on the shirt; and the red on the bush-jacket.)
After 1973, the Recces received their own unique breast badge (Army Diver badge).
After 1987, the 4 Recce - Attack Diver badges were approved, but they did not replace the Army Diver (Recce) badge.
