Union-Castle Line Memorabilia from Athlone Castle and SS Reina del Mar
The reverse painted ashtray in a white metal frame is from Athlone Castle - built 1934 and scrapped 1965. She was launched by Princess Alice, wife of the Earl of Athlone, a former Governor General of South Africa on 28th November 1935. In 1937 she was the first mail ship to call at Buffalo Harbour, Port Elizabeth. In 1940 she was the Commodore ship of the Union-Castle convoy to carry South African troops to the Suez, following the outbreak of war in North Africa. She was scrapped in 1965 by China Steel Corp.
The boxed note book and pencil is mint in box from the SS Reina del Mar. She was built in 1955 for The Pacific Steam Navigation Company and did service as a cruise liner on the American until 1964, when she became part of the Union-Castle Liner fleet. She cruised between Southampton and Cape Town. She was withdrawn from service in 1974 and scrapped by Taiwanese breakers in 1975.
