Here on auction we have a original issue SA SF (Recce) copy camo series SA SF (Recce) Herring-Bone Twill copy camo French lizard HBT "airborne-smock" (jacket) - based on the TAP 47 style and also the Porra airborne smock - in mint & un-used condition - this Medium size (fits as a large - measures 65 cm across the chest) - cut quiet large as a smock or outer garment).
Being a mint item - this airborne-smock still has the (usually missing) hood attached!
The Recces had an extensive copy camo programme produced approx 20 copies of enemy uniforms likely to be encountered in Southern Africa in the early 1980's - two sets of each copied enemy uniform were made - one in typical enemy cut/ style mimicing the exact details even down to the weight of the fabric, the sewn style eg. pockets shape etc, and the buttons! The 2nd set produced was in a typical SADF uniform cut of the time but obviously then in the respective copy camo patterns - this piece is a more subdued basic olive green peice but never-the-less was widely used a fav item amongst team members.
These copy camo items were made for Recce psuedo ops/ cross border raids/ false flag ops and/ or strategic recce missions deep into enemy terrertory by small team members. This uniform was also extensively used for formal training and cycle by the recce's for many years.
The Recce's would often use enemy uniforms to gain tactical advantage at close quarters if discovered by the enemy and wearing a foreign uniform would give the small groups of SF a tactical advantage in the first few seconds - a key element for small teams survival when operating deep behind enemy lines in their own backyard so to speak. The vital seconds and element of surprise gained as a result of being clothed and dressed as an enemy soldier themselves was vital to many a teams quick and lucky escape and allowing a quick get-away and/ or breaking-of-contact allowing the team a better chance of survival if discovered ......this piece could even work at a distance to pass as UNITA.
PLEASE NOTE that this piece only has the silk size tag "med" - these jackets did not have the paper "type H" tag as per some other copy camo French lizard camo pieces.
