CHARLES, PRINCE OF WALES, is the eldest son of the Queen and the late Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. He was born on 14 November 1948 and was four at his mothers Coronation on 2 June 1953. Charles was given the title of Prince of Wales in 1958 and was invested at Caernarvon in 1969. King Edward I, known as Longshanks, ringed Wales with castles in the 13th Century as a way of subduing the rebellious Welsh and cementing English Power over them. He intended CAERNARVON CASTLE to be a Royal residence and the seat of his government in North Wales. The first Prince of Wales was born there in 1284. The latest, HRH Prince Charles, was invested at CAERNARVON in 1969 in a ceremony televised around the World.
THE WEDGWOOD COMPANY OF ENGLAND commissioned this absolutely exquisite china to commemorate HRH Prince Charles' investiture. It is museum quality and extremely hard to find. It was produced for only a short time and in very limited quantities. The current pricing on Replacements Ltd (R2,250 for a cup and saucer) is high, due to the rarity of this set and the generous amount of gold used on each item. As gold goes up in price - so does this china. When Prince Charles becomes King of England and eventually passes the crown to William sometime in this century - this set will no doubt become even more valuable.
This set is destined to become a museum piece as a result of the connection to Prince Charles and the Royal Family. This is not just fine bone china - it is a piece of 20th Century "House of Windsor" history....quite literally, "fit" for a King!
* Shipping costs for 6 cups and saucers are R140 via PostNet or R150 via courier (regret, South Africa only).
