Selling my brother in laws collection of bronze Benin heads which he collected in the 1980`s whilst working in West Africa. Please have a look at my other listings.

The Benin Bronzes come from Benin City, the historic capital of the  Kingdom of Benin , a major city state in West Africa from the medieval period. Benin City became part of the British Empire from 1897 to 1960 and is now located within the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Among the Edo peoples of Benin, the head represents the character and destiny of the individual, and freestanding heads like this one were placed on the shrines as symbols of the qualities and leadership of the previous ruler.
