The Grumman F-14 TOMCAT is an American supersonic fighter jet. Its hallmark is the variable geometry of the wings. The fighter was developed and produced by Grumman Corporation. The F-14 was designed to defend naval fleets by winning air superiority battles. It was also used to conduct tactical reconnaissance. Subsequent modifications enabled the transport of bombs intended for ground strikes. The United States Navy commissioned the F-14 in 1972. The primary user was the United States. In 1976 seventy-nine F-14s were exported to Iran, some of which are still in use. The aircraft was officially decommissioned by the U.S. Navy on September 22, 2006.
