Many are unaware of the fascinating story that the Third Reich raised a division of the SS from Allied prisoners of war and people who had left Britain prior to 1940 known as The British Free Corps. The story is written by a believed ex SOE agent. With the war in Europe making demands for control of newly occupied territories, the Third Reich established SS divisions from citizens within their newly conquered territories, in some cases Non-Aryans.As the Russian offensive floundered, SS units were raised from other sources, Allied POW's were seen as a resource that could be directed at Russia as boots on the ground or used in propaganda. This book covers the recruitment and the stories behind some of these men, some of whom like Eric Pleasants married German women. The story of Eric Pleasants is quite remarkable, he published a couple of books about this post war.Debates abound about how many Allied POW's were recruited into the SS, I was told that it was around 1200 by one source who indicated they fought on the Russian front some years before I bough this book, most sources point to around a hundred or less. Some fought in the battle for Berlin and a Russian officer took the papers from a dead BFC man in Berlin. A number had non-combat roles in the Kurt Eggers unit which was responsible for propaganda.A fascinating book as is the book by Adrian Weale on this subject. - M. Sanders
