Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier is the sixth installment in the series and acts as a direct follow-up to the core trilogy. Developed by High Impact Games, it returns to the third-person action-adventure platforming style while introducing significant aerial combat elements.
Story and Setting
The game follows a worldwide Eco shortage that has plunged the world into environmental instability. Jak, Daxter, and Keira travel to "the Brink," an unfinished edge of the world, to find the source of the shortage. They must contend with Sky Pirates and the city of Aeropa, ruled by the antagonistic Duke Skyheed. Because of the shortage, Jak cannot transform into Dark Jak at will, making him reliant on new Eco powers, while Daxter occasionally transforms into "Dark Daxter."
Gameplay Mechanics
Graphics and Style
The PS2 version is a port of the PSP original. While it features 3D environments, it has a more muted visual style compared to the earlier, vibrant Naughty Dog titles. It includes a "Hero Mode" which allows players to replay the story with their previously unlocked weapons and upgrades.
Reception
The game received mixed reviews. While praised for its solid platforming mechanics and the addition of flight gameplay, it was often criticized for having a different "feel" and lower production value than the original trilogy.
