A Rare James Cole Mealies 3d Token. Franklin Store. Circa 1900.

James Cole (1842-1937) owned numerous farms and trading stores in East Griqualand, Southern Natal and Lesotho. This token (punch mark to right of denomination) was issued for the Franklin store. The Cole and Strachan families dominated business in the region and were connected by marriage. Reference: Brian Hern, Southern African Tokens, No. 112c. Further information on the James Cole tokens can be found at this link to Scott Balson’s excellent website.

Discounting the tokens issued for the Cedara Store (which nobody I know has ever seen), the Franklin tokens are the rarest of all.

Brass. Diameter 25.8 mm. Mass 5.7 gm. Upright reeded edge. Holed at the top (as all are). The missing piece of rim at 7 o'clock is not circulation damage but a planchet manufacturing error.
