James Dorothy was one of Frans Claerhout's first pupils and shows strong influence in his work by Claerhout's Belgian Expressionism , particularly in the depiction of animals and rural people of the Free State.
James Dorothy used his mother's name as his artist surname and went into exile from South Africa overseas, where he continued to paint.
