James Vicary Thackwray (1919-1994) District Six scene in oil on canvas
Painting size 970mm x 815mm
Frame Size 1065mm x 915mm
A stunning painting possibly one of his early paintings from the 1960's
The Catostrophic decleration of District Six by the Apartheid government on Feb 11, 1966 as a purely "white" area, saw, Thackwray portray much of the area in his art. His paintings have a haunting quality which evidences the pain and suffering of the people. They remain a reminder of what people endured under the government of the day and the manner in which they managed to cope
Previous paintings in this same genre have sold for R27,000 to R35,000 on online art auctions
