Additional Information

Jan Smuts, one of the most famous South Africans of the twentieth century, remains a controversial figure. Was he one of the outstanding statesmen of his time or perhaps a traitor to Afrikaner interests and possibly a racist? In this book, General J.C. Smuts is reevaluated. Smuts' role as intellectual (including father of holism), military strategist (he played a leading role during three defections), politician (for half a century in the "era of the generals" he was prominent) and statesman (he was a driving force behind the formation of the Union of South Africa, the British Commonwealth, the League of Nations and the United Nations) is assessed. A total of 20 authors helped write. Like Paul Kruger at the end of the 19th century and Nelson Mandela at the end of the 20th century, Jan Smuts towered above his contemporaries in the first half of the 20th century as a leader of extraordinary stature. His statesmanship was hailed internationally. Yet the NP and ANC governments underplayed his contributions for decades, as they did not support their Afrikaner and black nationalist versions of South African history. It was mainly English-speaking writers, South Africans and foreigners, who maintained Smuts' memory. A reappraisal of Smuts from an Afrikaans point of view will therefore fill a gap in the literature on the history of South Africa in the first half of the 20th century. Today we have a better perspective on his contributions within the historical context of his time. New evidence that constantly comes to light also makes it possible to formulate a more informed opinion on questions surrounding Smuts.
