'Charlotte Bronte's novels end strangely. The narrator of Shirley (1849) departs with a brusque envoi: 'The story is told. I think I now see the judicious reader putting on his spectacles to look for the moral. It would be an insult to his sagacity to offer directions. I only say, God speed him in the quest!' Villette (1853) permits readers of 'sunny imaginations' to devise an alternative ending. The 'Conclusion' of Jane Eyre (1847), Bronte's first published novel, is less open-ended but nonetheless curious'.
