Wonderful Japanese sake set in solid silver. Rare. Excellent condition. All rims firmly intact and evenly applied and filigree appears complete.
Marked sterling 950, ie 95% silver, which is actually a higher grade than sterling silver. All six glass holders come with their glasses! Wine ( or sake ) not included!
Silver has traditionally been used sparingly in Japanese culture as the metal is scarce in the country. Hence the fine filigree design such as this one featuring bamboo with bamboo leaves.
This was originally used for either sake, a traditional drink from Japan, or also possibly grape wine. It is a spectacular wine or liqueur bottle holder and glass set and the standard size wine bottle fits perfectly. See photos.
I did not know this but wine from grapes has been made in Japan since the late 19th century. An old set such as this could also have been used for other types of wine or drink besides sake, although sake serving was probably the primary function of the set.
