Offered for sale is a fine Japanese Awaji Art Deco ceramic vase dating to the 1930's ; Awaji pottery takes its name from the Island of Awaji where these ceramic items were made. Awaji pottery was made for export to Europe and the Americas and is now highly collectible and hard to find. The last kilns on the Island of Awaji closed in the late 1930's so these items are difficult to source. This example is a hand thrown vase with a simple and elegant meiping shape , high shouldered and tapering to a round base with a slightly flared squat neck. The vase is made from a buff coloured clay similar to stoneware. The vase has a hand painted motif of lotus leaves reserved against an off white, cream coloured band or panel which runs around the circumference of the vase in the middle. This panel is partly obscured by the thick viscous royal blue coloured glaze which runs freely from the top section of the vase . The decorative panel in the middle of the vase has a ribbed border at the top and bottom. The vase has no impressed marks on the base. The vase is medium sized - 18 cm high ; the width in the middle of the vase is 14 cm ; the width of the base is 9.5 cm ; the top aperture is 8 cm cm.
