You might want to know about Japanese Swords:
The Katana is one of the traditional Japanese swords worn by the samurai class of feudal Japan, also commonly referred to as a "samurai sword". The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single edged blade, circular or squared guard, and long grip to accommodate two hands. It has historically been associated with the samurai of feudal Japan, and has become renowned for its sharpness and cutting ability.
The Wakizashi has a blade between 30 and 60 cm, close to the length of a katana being called o-wakizashi and wakizashi closer to tanto length being called ko-wakizashi. The wakizashi being worn together at the same time along with the katana was the official symbol that the wearer was a samurai or swordsmen of feudal Japan. When worn together the pair of swords were called daish, which translates literally as "big-little". The katana was the big or long sword and the wakizashi the companion sword. Wakizashi are not necessarily just a smaller version of the katana, it could be forged differently and have a different cross section.
The Tanto is commonly referred to as a knife or dagger, the blade is single or double edged with a length between 15 and 30 cm. The tanto was designed primarily as a stabbing weapon, but the edge can be used for slashing as well. Tanto are generally forged in hira-zukuri style (without ridgeline), meaning that their sides have no ridge line and are nearly flat, unlike the shinogi-zukuri structure of a katana. Some tanto have particularly thick cross-sections for armor-piercing duty, and are called yoroi toshi.
