This remarkable Japanese Maple variety has been cultivated in Japan since the mid-1800's and is arguably the most outstanding of the dissectum types. Owing to its cascading form, its Japanese name translates as 'leaves of the rice plant'. Growing somewhat more upright and fuller with larger leaves than other dissectums, it holds its deep purple-red color all summer and turning to a brilliant crimson-red in fall. This variety is a very sturdy, vigorous grower with a mature height and width up to 2-3 meters, although most will max out at 1.2 -1.8 meters high. It responds well to pruning and is also suitable for container growing or bonsai culture and is cold hardy to -20°Celsius.
