Size: Up to 4,5m
Hardiness: -10C (Zone 8-9). Frost tolerant
Water requirements: Prefers well drained soil, but is adaptable, and drought tolerant. Regular watering will however speed up growth and result in a more attractive palm.
Light requirements: Full sun to semi-shade. Full sun will enhance silver colouring, while semi-shade will result in longer fronds, and a very graceful aspect.
Leaf: Feather leaves. Bluish grey-green, 1.2m in length and very attractive. Recurved towards the ground, from the growth point.
Trunk: Grows to a height of 4m. Stout trunk, 0.5m to 0.9m wide. Leaf bases may persist for some time, but don’t detract from it’s good looks. Older specimens have a clean trunk.
Fruit: Beautiful bright orange edible fruit are produced, called Pindo Dates in Americas deep south.
They are used to make a delicious jam.
Origin: Dry woodlands and savannahs of Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay.
Description
This attractive, cold hardy feather palm is highly prized by landscapers, especially for it’s use in smaller gardens and mixed plantings. It’s a great accent plant for a lawn area, as well as in groupings. Pindo Palms adapt well to container culture, and can be very attractive in patio pots. It is not a very fast grower, and is therefore ideal for any situations where space is limited.
Around 20 kilos of delicious golden fruit can be produced on each inflorescence. In the southern states of the U.S.A, there is a thriving Pindo jam industry… Hence, the other common name, Jelly Palm. (Americans call jam, jelly). The fruit has a very unusual flavour, which is predominantly an apple/apricot blend, but with other subtle tropical accents.
There is a lot of potential for South African entrepreneurs to develop a local industry, as I am not aware of anyone currently doing this. It would obviously be a long term project, as it would take several years to develop an orchard of Pindo palms to a size where they would fruit in sufficient quantity.
Could be a great medium to long term investment, either to grow and sell the seedlings to farmers and landscapers/nurseries or to propagate them for the establishment of your own orchard.
