Sapphire (Greek: sappheiros) refers to gem varieties of the mineral corundum, It is an extremely hard and durable gemstone. Sapphires are available in virtually all colors but red. Red Sapphires are known as Rubies. Sapphires were actually not known before the Roman Empire and prior to that time sapphiros referred to blue gems in general.
