Beth Hatefutsoth, the Museum of the Diaspora in Tel Aviv, Israel, is the only repository of data on the history of diaspora Jewry. However the only South African information presently stored in the database of the museum is the history of the Jews in some of the large cities.

The history of early Jewish settlement in the harsh and often hostile regions of the southern and eastern Cape makes for fascinating reading and includes the story of the oldest settlement of Jews in South Africa - in the district of Albany in 1820. Living a religious life in these lush, beautiful and remote surroundings was often extremely challenging, nonetheless many communities managed to establish congregations, build synagogues and maintain their Jewish identity. This volume includes settlement in Griqualand East & Transkei, Langkloof, Little Karoo, North Eastern Cape, Overberg and Settler Country.
