The problem: Before the 1890's carbonated beverages like beer and soda were sealed with wires, heavy corks, or swing tops.  These were expensive, hard to cleaned, and often leaked gas, leaving the drink flat. The crown cork (1892) Inventor William painter changed the industry forever by inventing the Crown cork bottle cap - the crimped metal cap still used on glass bottles today.  The "Church key" (1894): Because the new crown caps were sealed tight, painter patented the first handheld cap lifter in 1894. Early designs resembled heavy keys used by clergy, earning them the nickname "Church keys".
