Johann August Wahlberg (1810-1856), a Swedish naturalist, traveled through large parts of southern Africa, especially Natal and South West Africa, before the middle of the nineteenth century. He was sent by the Swedish Academy for Science to collect plants and animals in southern Africa for the Natural Sciences Museum in Stockholm. The journals of his travels are generally brief and objective, but his portrayal of people he met is usually reliable and unprejudiced.
