JOHANNES MEINTJES - ANTON ANREITH SCULPTOR (1951)
THIS BOOK BELONGED TO THE CANADIAN ARTIST, THE LATE MR DONALD CAMERON ROUTLEDGE.
THE BOOK IS DATED LONDON, 20 APRIL 1953 (IN MR CAMERON'S HANDWRITING)
DEDICATED TO JOHN ROTHMAN (BELOW RIGHT IN THE PHOTOGRAPH)
- Edition limited to 1000 copies.
This publication is one of Meintjes' scarce books; sought-after Africana.
The book itself is in a good condition considering the publication date of 1951; some signs of foxing on the first and last pages. Without a dust jacket (see image). As can be expected, normal signs of age-related wear throughout. Inscription with first owner's name, the artist Mr Donald Cameron Routledge, dated London, 20 April 1953, appears on the first page.
Johannes Meintjes was a painter that enjoyed tremendous public support for his art since early age and also received international acclaim as an author later on. The fame he enjoyed as a 21 year old artist is unequalled in the South African history of art. Meintjes died in 1980 and had established himself as a major South African painter and writer. He had painted more than a thousand canvases, produced dozens of sculptures and exhibited in all South Africa's major galleries. Apart from numerous articles and smaller literary works, he had published 35 books, amongst them internationally authoritative works on South African history.
The correct spelling of his surname is 'Johannes Meintjes' (and not 'Johannes Meintjies'). Some of Meintjes' books are of historical GLBTQ+ interest as they are considered to be early examples of South African gay writing.
