First edition (1948); 77pp. Anreith Press, Cape Town.

Representative of Meintjes' creative output by the age of 25 : 50 plates and four drawings (scroll down for all images below).

Text by Pieter Marincowitz in English and Afrikaans.

This publication is most certainly one of Meintjes' rarest books and, having been sold for R12,880 at Stephan Welz & Co on 1 June 2010 (lot 482 - see image at the end), it holds the record for the highest price paid for any book by Johannes Meintjes on public auction to date.

Very rare and highly sought-after Africana. A fascinating insight into the life and times as well as artistic output of the young and very famous South African artist Johannes Meintjes shortly after the Second World War.

In a reasonable condition considering the publication date of 1948. Dust jacket largely intact and in an acceptable condition. As can be expected, normal signs of age-related wear throughout. (Please enquire if you require more information and/or photographs).

Postage & Packaging: R100 (Postnet) and R225 (courier).

Pieter Marincowitz & Johannes Meintjes (Clifton Beach, Spring 1947)

Johannes Meintjes was a painter that enjoyed tremendous public support for his art since early age and also received international acclaim as an author later on.

The fame he enjoyed as a 21 year old artist is unequalled in the South African history of art.

Meintjes died in 1980 and had established himself as a major South African painter and writer. He had painted more than a thousand canvases, produced dozens of sculptures and exhibited in all South Africa's major galleries.

Apart from numerous articles and smaller literary works, he had published 35 books, amongst them internationally authoritative works on South African history.

The correct spelling of his surname is 'Johannes Meintjes' (and not 'Johannes Meintjies')

Some of Meintjes' books are of historical GLBT interest as they are considered to be early examples of South African gay writing.
