Johannesburg Film Society Poster, early 1980's, Piccadilly Cinema,  JHB, original, 50 cms x 72 cms, condition: basically as new.

The Piccadilly Cinema in Johannesburg is a defunct cinema that was located on the corner of Claim and Noord Streets. It opened in 1961 and was considered a "revolutionary cinema gimmick," similar to modern IMAX cinemas, showcasing films like "This is Cinerama" and "Seven Wonders of the World". The Piccadilly Cinema closed on February 27, 1986, and was later converted into a nightclub called "Thunderdome".

The poster references the film 'Battleship Potemkin'  a 1925 Soviet silent epic film, directed and co-written by Sergei Eisenstein. The film presents a dramatization of the mutiny that occurred in 1905 when the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin rebelled against their officers.

Battleship Potemkin is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. It was voted the fifty-fourth-greatest film of all time, and it had been placed in the top 10 in many surveys.
